The Tanners’ Eye-Candy Containers

Hands-down, the most incredible containers I’ve ever seen are those created by Freeland and Sabrina Tanner.

I’m honored to call this landscape design dream team good friends of mine and try to visit their Napa Valley garden as often as possible.

I’ve written about their glorious garden here and here, but today I want to highlight their breathtaking containers.

Artfully placed throughout their garden, each container is overflowing with unusual plants.

And, the containers themselves are works of art.

Some are recycled items you’d never imagine fitting in with this garden, some are antiques, and some are lovingly made by Freeland.

All, however, are works of art.

I hope you find inspiration for your own garden and enjoy this visual feast!

And don’t forget that if a container is unique enough it doesn’t need to be planted at all!

And don’t forget the impact a grouping of similar containers can make when filled with twigs and branches.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post and look at containers and their placement within the garden with fresh eyes!

  • I really love everything you write about. I’m not able to work in my garden like I used to, but I’m still out their plugging away. Also, love my houseplants. I have around 100 in my house. I really enjoy reading and growing unusual plants. Keep up the great work. Would love to visit your yard. It’s gorgeous also from what you’ve posted.

    • Hello Dee, and thank you for your sweet comment! 100 houseplants? You’re definitely a gardener at heart, aren’t you!! I’m so glad you enjoy my blog and my garden photos (though to be honest, it’s a little blistered after this summer’s heat!)

  • OH REBECCA, take me with you! This is delicious.

I’ve looked at the photos a dozen times and find something new with each go over.

    Thanks, thanks,

    Love,

  • I love all the different plants they grow, the range of pot styles. It gives such a clear sense of how obsessed and talented these two are!

  • I guess I am a container geek, but I didn’t know this until recently. Unusual container combinations excite me and I love the ones you have displayed.

    • They look like tillandsias, but they’re the amazing Puya plants (Annie’s Annuals sells them & has some giant specimens also) – aren’t they amazing?!! They have these insanely turqoise-blue flowers, too (as if they needed anything to make them cooler than they are, right?)
